  • Kumana National Park, Sri Lanka

Kumana National Park, located on Sri Lanka’s remote southeast coast, is a hidden gem renowned for its pristine landscapes, rich biodiversity, and rare wildlife encounters. Unlike the more crowded Yala, Kumana offers a more secluded and wild experience, making it a favorite among serious wildlife photographers and nature lovers.

The park is especially famous for its leopard sightings, with a unique twist — “beach leopards”. These elusive big cats have been spotted along the park’s coastal dunes and near the Indian Ocean, offering an incredibly rare and dramatic photography opportunity. This rare behavior of leopards roaming near beaches is almost unseen elsewhere in the world.

Apart from leopards, Kumana is also home to:

  • Elephants
  • Sloth bears
  • Mugger crocodiles
  • Over 200 bird species (including migratory and endemic species)

With its lush wetlands, lagoons, and untouched beaches, Kumana provides a striking backdrop for wildlife photography, especially during the early morning and late afternoon light.
